Let Your Emotions Flow

15 June 2024

“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”

- Heraclitus

In the ever-flowing stream of life, philosopher Heraclitus reminds us that change is the only constant.  Consider this – our emotions, much like the currents of a river, are meant to flow.  When we resist change or cling to the past, we create dams that block the natural flow of our feelings.

So, why is it important to allow our emotions flow?  Let’s delve into it.  Our three primary negative emotions - anger, sadness and fear - often stem from unresolved issues within ourselves (e.g. guilt), with others (e.g. anger), with situations (e.g. feeling stuck), or with the unknown (e.g. anxiety and fear).  These emotions become stagnant when we fail to process them effectively, keeping us trapped in the past or anxious about the future.

My client, let’s call her Pam, felt overwhelmed by the monotony of her life.  Despite nothing being evidently wrong, she felt bored and helpless to “prevent” all the changes around her.  She was stuck in the future as she feared she was unable to cope with all the rapid changes.  She was holding onto all the mundane that she was familiar with because in a way, that was her safe haven.  In the realm of therapy and healing, stepping out of the comfort zone is a fundamental step.  Through hypnotherapy, Pam experienced her future like a movie, she was able to confront her limiting beliefs and uncover her inner resources to deal with the unknown.  She realized the importance of not just noticing the changes but allowing them to happen, going with the flow, and letting her emotions flow.  By visualizing her future with curiosity rather than fear, Pam learned to navigate life’s uncertainties with acceptance.

From this moment onwards, allow yourself to adopt a curious mindset and an open heart, you will be amazed by how much more you could explore.  At the end of the day, isn’t life an adventure?
